Beavers Join Miners In CBI Finals

Oregon State did it again!!!

For the second straight game, the Beavers used overtime to "survive and advance" in the CBI Tournament. Tonight, they beat Stanford, 65-62, and will face UTEP in the "Best of Three" Championship Series beginning Monday.

And it looked like Calvin Haynes was going to be the hero again. After collecting the game-winner against Vermont, Haynes hit a jumper just above the free throw line to give Oregon State a two-point lead, but Lawrence Hill's follow shot tied the game and forced overtime.

In the extra session, Oregon State fell behind by five points, but the Beavers rallied for the win. Lathen Wallace led the scoring with 16 points. Roeland Schaftenaar added 14 points.

The CBI Championship Series gets underway Monday night at 10:00 PM as the Beavers host UTEP. Game #2 and #3 (if necessary) will be played in El Paso, TX.

UTEP MAKES FINALS, WILL HOST TWO GAMES

UTEP beat Richmond tonight, 81-69, in the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational and will be hosting two games in the "Best of Three" Championship Series.

The Miners (22-12) used a 10-0 run after Richmond had gotten to within two points to open the game back up again. Stefon Jackson had another huge offensive night, scoring 34 points. He set a CBI record by going 14-16 from the free throw line.

David Gonzalvez led Richmond (20-16) with 24 points.

The CBI has already said that UTEP will host the second and, if necessary, third games of the title series. Game #1 will be hosted by the winner of tonight's second semifinal between Oregon State and Stanford. Oregon State leads 28-26 at half.

Tonight's Games

Tim McCormick, who is doing the color analysis of the UTEP-Richmond game tonight says from courtside that everyone appears ready for a great game tonight.

He adds that, "this has the potential to be one of the best games for guards he has seen this season." Not really a surprise considering the work that Kevin Anderson and David Gonzalvez have done for Richmond and Stefon Jackson, Julyan Stone and Randy Culpepper have done for the Miners.

Tip comes in just 90 minutes. Enjoy!!!!

CBI Semifinals Set For Tonight

The College Basketball Invitational has reached the Semifinal Round with games tonight in Richmond, VA and Corvallis, OR. Both semifinal games will be televised on HDNet.

At 8:00 PM ET, the Richmond Spiders (20-15) take on the UTEP Miners (21-12). Richmond has taken out St. John's and College of Charleston to reach this point. They have been led by the play of their backcourt... Kevin Anderson and Daniel Gonzalvez. The pair have accounted for 56% of the Richmond offense (83 of 149 points) while shooting 54% from the floor and 64% (9-14) from the three-point line. Meanwhile, UTEP is led by guard Stefon Jackson, who has a pair of 26-point efforts in wins over Nevada and Northeastern. Guard Randy Culpepper has come off the bench to average 18.5 ppg in those wins.

Then at 10:00 PM ET, Oregon State (15-17) and Stanford (20-13) meet for the fourth time this season. The Pac-10 rivals saw the Beavers win the two regular season games, only to have the Cardinal get a measure of revenge with a victory in the Pac-10 Tournament. Calvin Haynes scored 19 points, including the game-winner with :06 left in overtime to beat Vermont by a 71-70 score to reach the semis. Stanford has beaten up their two opponents, taking out Boise State (96-76) and Wichita State (70-56).

The winners will meet in the Best of Three Championship Series beginning next Monday.

Updates

Well, another good night so far...

David Gonzalvez goes for 27 points as Richmond rally to beat St. John's, 75-69. Good win for Chris Mooney's team. The Spiders will play College of Charleston who beat Troy, 93-91 in a track meet in Troy, Ala. The backcourt of Andre Goudelock and Tony White, Jr. combined for 53 points in the win.

Meanwhile, Vermont knocked off Green Bay, 76-72. This one went back and forth wil the Catamounts (24-8) pulling it out late. Two-time America East Player of the Year Marqus Blakely went for 22 points and 11 rebounds. Vermount will meet the winner of the Houston-Oregon State game, which is 19-16 at the half (huh???).

Wichita State beat Buffalo, 84-73, as the Shockers put five players in double figures led by Clevin Hannah's 14 points. Looks like the Shockers will play Stanford who is up big in the second half over Boise State.

What A First Day In The CBI

Well, Day One is complete and you couldn't have asked for better games. Both Northeastern-Wyoming and UTEP-Nevada went right down to the wire... both ending in two point wins for the road teams.

Ironically, both road teams jumped out to double-figure leads in the first half of their games. Northeastern held off a late run by Wyoming in a 64-62 win. Then, UTEP did the same thing and got a bucket from C-USA all-time leading scorer Stefon Jackson with :04 seconds left to beat Nevada, 79-77.

Only five road teams won games last year in the tournament, so it will make tonight's six-game slate very interesting.

So UTEP and Northeastern will meet in the second round next Monday. Site TBD.

Tonight's schedule...

St. John's @ Richmond- 7:00 PM ET
Charleston @ Troy- 8:00 PM ET
Vermont @ Green Bay- 8:00 PM ET
Buffalo @ Wichita State- 8:00 PM ET (HDNet)
Boise State @ Stanford- 10:00 PM ET
Houston @ Oregon State- 10:00 PM ET (HDNet)

More updates later when we get them.
